They say “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. It is more than relevant right now as the #trashtagchallenge is gaining popularity in 2019.

There have been about 26000 posts and counting about the #trashtagchallenge. You would be surprised to know that this #trashtagchallenge actuality started 4 years ago by Reinhold and his friend John Heyward on a road trip to the USA. They lost a receipt through their car window and then vowed to take up the challenge to pick 100 pieces of trash. Fast forward to 2019 and even Bhutan has stood up to the challenge. A remarkable example of how its always an idea so simple that tends to change everything, everywhere.

On March 30th and 31st 2019, 2000+ volunteers took up the #trashtagchallenge countrywide. In the words of one of the chief organizer Namgyel Wangchuk “Once it was posted on Facebook for Mega Trash challenge messages started to pop up one after another. The motivational factor was the desire to be a part of something big and positive.”

This challenge unlike other infamous challenges exudes positivity, develops teamwork and even invokes patriotism. Youth around the country have taken the initiative personally and cleaned up smaller areas and posted the outcome online which in turn has been encouraging yet more people into tidying up the country. This surge of motivation has been uninterrupted thus far and what remains to be seen is how far and how long will this go.
We at Ambo hope this will of super positive encouragement will continue to lure more youth at large into finding and engaging in such challenges that transform the beautiful little country and the world at large which we so dearly call home.
Who would have known that garbage can actually motivate people? But then again a sparkle of positivity is all that takes to turn trash to treasure.
