Paro Tshechu is one of the most important annual religious festivals in Bhutan. It has been held every year since 17th century. This is when Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Ponpo Rigzin Nyinpo initiated the festival together with the dedication of Paro Dzong in 1644.
Paro Tshechu starts on the 10th Day of 2nd Bhutanese lunar month and ends on the 15th day. The festival offers opportunities to witness the Bhutanese’s unique culture and history. Attending the festival, it is a belief that one gains merits.
The last day of festival ends with display of a Thongdrel, the Guru Thongdrel. The Thongdrel is a great Buddhist art and sacred that simply seeing Thongdrel said to cleanse the viewer’s sin.
